Another close call on golf's highest stage, but there were no tears or regrets this time. "Everyone looks at a second (place) and they want to make it a negative. Not at all," Garcia said. "I did almost everything I could."

Tiger Woods finishes 69th at British, says he should make Ryder Cup team

By Doug Ferguson - Associated Press

His first major of the year, and second tournament since March 31 back surgery, wasn't much of an audition for U.S. captain Tom Watson. Woods was never the same after opening the British Open with a 69. The mistakes kept piling up, and so did the big numbers, and he closed with a 3-over 75 on Sunday at Royal Liverpool.

By Doug Ferguson - Associated Press

Woods began the British Open with five birdies in a six-hole stretch for a 69 that put him only three shots behind Rory McIlroy. He walked off Royal Liverpool on Saturday with another round over par, leaving him 19 shots out of the lead.

His six-shot lead on Rickie Fowler was the largest at The Open since Tiger Woods led by six at St. Andrews in 2000. Even so, McIlroy was doing his best to preach caution entering Sunday.

British Open: McIlroy builds a 4-shot lead; Tiger barely makes cut

By Doug Ferguson - Associated Press

Rory McIlroy only saw birdies at Royal Liverpool, mostly on his scorecard, and even one pheasant that trotted across the eighth green as he was lining up a putt. That was but a minor interruption in his command performance Friday in the British Open.

Rory McIlroy leads, Tiger Woods lurks at British Open

By Doug Ferguson - Associated Press

After a shaky start to the British Open, Woods ripped through Royal Liverpool on Thursday much like he did eight years ago, when he won the claret jug for the third time. Five birdies in six holes carried Woods to a 3-under 69, leaving him just three shots behind McIlroy.
